Connect with nature, yourself, and others in this week-long yoga retreat set in Mexico’s spiritually and culturally rich Yucatan Peninsula. Asana classes in the Iyengar/Kripalu tradition for students of all levels in a beautifully inspiring practice space. Two yoga classes daily (sunrise & late afternoon), plus a third class on some days. This retreat is an opportunity to deepen your practice if you have experience with yoga, or to take time out from your schedule to learn yoga for the first time. Come as you are!
The week will incorporate the elements of nature, the labyrinth, and the Mayan Temezcal (optional, extra fee). Time between classes opens to hanging out on the long white sandy beach, reading, writing, walking, visiting local shops, or whatever brings you comfort, pleasure, and peace. You can also make appointments at the healing spa which offers a variety of incredible treatments.
A day off mid-week for optional excursions such as Tulum ruins, Coba, Chechen Itza, Cenotes, and the absolutely amazing Sian Kaan Biosphere.
Named one of the ten best places for a yoga retreat in the world, Maya Tulum is located in Tulum, Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, about 1 1/2 hours south of Cancun.
Accommodations: Sleep inside simple, yet elegant, thatched-roofed palapas that are connected by sand pathways a few steps from the ocean, restaurant and yoga halls.
Travel Logistics: Air travel to Cancun. There is shuttle service between the airport and Maya Tulum several times a day. On weekends the shuttle is $40 each way. Private Taxi is about $90 each way, and the local bus is $7 each way.
Check in time at Maya Tulum is 3:00 pm, and we will meet for an orientation at 5:30 pm on Saturday, March 7.
Food: Delicious vegetarian and fresh seafood fare. If you have any particular dietary requirements, we shall do our best to help you. All meals are included in the cost of the retreat, except on your excursion.
Billie Jo Joy, R.Y.T., is co-founder, and co–manager of Art & Soul, and owner of JoyYoga. She is Iyengar trained (20 years primarily with Zoe Stewart), Kripalu certified (200 hours), Yoga of Energy Flow (500 hours). Her instruction is ornamented with yogic philosophy, experiential anatomy, and poetry. She offers a safe and friendly place for practice that balances strength, flexibility, reflection, and spiritual upliftment. She is well known for her popular gentle and restorative yoga classes, and her retreats in Mexico, Italy, and Michigan. Billie Jo is a movement specialist having studied many forms for over 30 years. Billie Jo has taught people of all ages from infants to elderly, to people with disabilities, in all kinds of settings from day care centers, to college campuses, to corporations, developing original and effective classes for the populations she serves.
Billie Jo Joy is also an accomplished dancer, choreographer, actor, writer, director, and producer with credits in stage and film. On retreats, she has been known to offer up an evening of improvisation.
Billie Jo has a master’s degree in education from Harvard University, specializing in leadership and creativity. As a founding member of Harvard’s Project BRIDGES, she worked on development projects in 12 developing countries. Later, she worked on Harvard President Rudenstein’s Mind, Brain, Behavior Initiative developing innovative undergraduate curriculum that aims to increase mind –body understanding. Also at Harvard, she was fortunate to work on several mind-body medicine projects including a research project in China working with Qi Masters (funded by the MacArthur Foundation on Mind-Body Interactions) and with the Mind & Life Institute, which involved meetings and research with the Dali Lama in India. Students have called her an “exceptional and knowledgeable teacher.”
